Cosmelan & Dermamelan Peel - Which One is For Me?

Cosmelan and Dermamelan are the world's most popular treatments for all types of skin pigmentation, and they are safe and effective on all skin types.

Cosmelan vs Dermamelan Treatment?

Dermamelan is 20-30% stronger than Cosmelan Peel, so it is more suitable for deeper pigmentation. Your therapist can help you decide whether a Cosmelan or Dermamelan treatment is more suitable for your type of skin.

Indications -

  • Melasma

  • Sun spots

  • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation

  • Lentigos

  • Freckles

  • Scarring and discolouration for acne

  • Improvement in skin tone and texture

  • Overall brightening and refines the skin.

Cosmelan & Dermamelan consist of an in-clinic treatment mask, home care products, as well as TWO follow up Healite LED light treatments.

What does the treatment involve?

A complete consultation is recommended beforehand to verify that an appropriate treatment plan has been devised. There is a clinic phase and a home care phase to the treatment.

Your Dermal therapist will cleanse and prepare your skin in-clinic. The Cosmelan or Dermamelan mask will then be applied, and then needs to be left on for 8-12 hours depending on the severity of your pigmentation and skin type. Your therapist will advise you when you can remove the mask at home.

It is best to come into the clinic in the morning and avoid making any plans as you will be required to stay indoors during this time. You can then wash off the mask at home and your skin may start to feel tight, red and a bit swollen. Over the coming days, the peeling process will commence.

The second phase of the treatment then begins, which consists of the application of home care products. We provide a detailed skin care routine to follow over the coming months to achieve the best outcome.

How long do results last?

Long-term benefits are dependent on meticulous home care for six months following treatment, as well as ongoing sun avoidance, daily use of SPF, reapplication of SPF, and avoidance of other triggers. Every person's skin reacts differently to therapy for pigmentation; some people only require a single treatment, while others may require treatment annually or every few years.

What happens after my treatment?

Your skin will begin to peel and may feel very tight, dry and slightly sensitive. It is extremely important not to pick or peel at your skin, as this may damage the healthy new skin underneath. The skin care maintenance program at this time is essential to keep your skin hydrated.

The results can be visible as soon as 10-14 days and ongoing improvement in the skin can be seen over the next month. It is recommended to continue the maintenance skin care routine for 6 months following the Cosmelan or Dermamelan peel.

What are the treatment risks?

Dermamelan treatment has minimal risks and a very safe. Cosmelan & Dermamelan cannot be performed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have been on the medication Roaccutane in the last 6 months, have an active infection or open wounds, have active herpes simplex (cold sores), or have a family history of keloid scarring. Other skin care products are not allowed to be used throughout the therapy, and other skin treatments should be avoided.
