COSMELAN & DermaMELAN

cosmelan depigmenting Hillarys Subiaco

+ Who is it suitable for?

Cosmelan & Dermamelan is suitable for most patients that are concerned with pigmentation including melasma (hormonal pigmentation), sun spots, freckles, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and scarring & discolouration from acne. This topical treatment is suitable for all skin types and will overall improve skin tone and texture leaving the skin bright and smooth.

+ Who cannot have Cosmelan/Dermamelan?

  • Pregnant and breast-feeding patients
  • Active herpes simplex
  • Current skin cancer in treatment area
  • Any patient who has has used oral isotretinon (Roaccutane) within 6 months prior to treatment
  • Any patient who has burned skin, blistered skin, irritated skin, or sensitive skin in any of the areas being treated
  • Any allergies should be discussed to ensure the treatment is safe

+ WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?

The Cosmelan Peel feels like a heavy moisturiser that is left on the skin for 6-8 hours. The Dermamelan Peel feels like a heavy moisturiser, followed by a sheet mask, both are left of the skin for 4 hours.

During this time most patients don't experience pain or discomfort although the skin may start to feel slightly tingly, itchy and warm towards the end of the day. We recommend coming into clinic in the morning for this procedure. It is important not to sleep with the mask on. Once the mask has been removed at home, the skin may start to feel warm, tight and slightly stingy. Redness and swelling may be present.

+ How many treatments are required?

The Cosmelan/Dermamelan procedure is a single in-clinic treatment, however some skin conditions may require treatment annually or every few years.

+ How long do results last for?

Most patients experience a significant improvement after just one treatment. Long-term benefits are dependent on meticulous home care for six months following cosmelan treatment and four months following Dermamelan, as well as ongoing sun avoidance, daily use of SPF, reapplication of SPF and avoidance of other triggers. It is important to understand that every skin responds differently to treating pigmentation.

+ Are results immediate?

Most patients will start to see results within 2 weeks post treatment and significant improvement within 4 weeks. Continuing the at-home product application for recommended treatment duration will achieve optimal results and prevent the reappearance of pigmentation.

+ Is there any downtime?

Downtime is 10-12 days although redness and dryness may last longer depending on each individual skin. Within 24 hours post treatment the skin will be red, warm and slightly swollen. Generally within 48-72 hours you can expect the skin will begin to feel itchy & dry and visible peeling will start. Strict adherence to the home maintenance program at this time is essential. All the necessary aftercare will be explained by our dermal therapist and follow up appointment can be booked to ensure skin is responding well.

It is important not to pick, rub or exfoliate the skin. Allow skin to shed naturally. If you pick the skin, you will increase the risk of infection and scarring. Cosmelan/Dermamelan has minimal risks and is a controlled treatment. The level of downtime from this treatment can be intense for some however this is expected and in no way is a complication of treatment.

+ What should I do before my appointment?

  • Consultation prior to appointment
  • Arrive 10 minutes early to your appointment to complete forms
  • Remove makeup prior, if possible
  • Avoid sun exposure for 1 week prior to appointment
  • Brightening Peel booster from mesoestetic can be used for 2 weeks prior to prep the skin

+ What is my post treatment care?

  • Avoid direct sun exposure
  • Reapply SPF
  • Mineral makeup can be applied from the following day if needed
  • Keep the skin hydrated
  • Avoid exercise for 48-72 hours
  • All aftercare will be explained in detail at your appointment
  • It is imperative that only mesoestetic skincare products are to be used on the skin to achieve the best possible outcome

ABOUT COSMELAN AND DERMAMELAN

Cosmelan and Dermamelan are professional depigmentation treatments designed to reduce stubborn pigmentation and promote even, radiant skin tone. Both treatments are clinically proven and formulated to target melasma, sun spots, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, while also improving overall skin texture and clarity.

Melanin is responsible for the darkening of the skin and contributing to such factors as melasma and other skin discolourations. Melanin is increased by sun exposure, acne, aging, and hormone fluctuation. These treatments work by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, a key factor in melanin production process. By regulating melanin, Cosmelan and Dermamelan help fade existing pigmentation and prevent future recurrence.

Cosmelan vs Dermamelan: What’s the Difference?

While both treatments follow a similar application process and share active depigmenting ingredients, they differ in terms of treatment intensity, application time, and post care duration:

The latest Cosmelan formulation involves an in-clinic peel application. This formulation stays on the skin for the duration of 6-8 hours. The home maintenance phase is a strict 6-month skincare protocol.

The latest Dermamelan formulation involves a peel application, followed by a Dermamelan ion mask to enhance results and soothe the skin. This formulation stays on the skin for the duration of 4 hours. The at home maintenance phase is 4 months, with more an intensive active protocol. Dermamelan contains 20% more active ingredients, however, the new formulation is tolerated well.
